IN MEMORIAM: Captain Sig Hansen, ‘Deadliest Catch’ Star, Passes Away at 59

SEATTLE, WA – It is with profound sadness that we confirm the passing of legendary fisherman and beloved television personality, Captain Sig Hansen, the long-time skipper of the F/V Northwestern on Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch. Hansen passed away on October 20, 2025, at 6:05 AM, following a sudden heart attack. He was 59 years old.
Captain Hansen was an iconic figure in the Bering Sea fishing fleet and a global celebrity, known for his relentless work ethic, dry wit, and deep, often intimidating, dedication to his craft. For two decades, he invited the world onto the unforgiving deck of the Northwestern, transforming the perilous world of Alaskan King Crab fishing into must-see television.

Born into a fishing dynasty, Hansen began working on the Northwestern at a young age, becoming one of the youngest captains in the fleet by the age of 24. His nearly 40-year career was defined by an unblemished safety record and an unparalleled success rate in some of the world’s most dangerous waters. His legacy is one of grit, tradition, and an unwavering respect for the sea.
In the wake of this devastating loss, we ask that you respect the privacy of his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, June, his daughters, Mandy and Nina, and the entire Hansen family.
A statement from the Hansen family reads: “The captain has made his final harbor. Though his loss leaves a void that can never be filled, we are comforted by the knowledge that he lived a life without regrets, doing the one thing he loved most. Please send your prayers and support to our family during this difficult time. Fair winds and following seas, Sig.”
The sea is calmer, the pots are lighter, and the Bering Sea will never feel the same without the Captain at the helm. Rest in Peace, Captain Sig Hansen. 🙏
