TRAGIC SHOCK – AMANI DIES AFTER THIRD LIVER TRANSPLANT

The Derrico family and the Doubling Down with the Derricos community have just received heartbreaking news: Amani Barkley, nephew of Deon Derrico, has passed away after a long battle with illness. Amani was introduced to the audience in season 3 of the show, when he had just undergone his third liver transplant.

Deon shared that Amani continued to encounter complications that initially seemed “minor,” but gradually led to a series of dangerous problems: sepsis, brain fungus, abdominal infection, kidney failure due to surgical support, and a severely weakened immune system to protect the new liver.

Health insurance problems, hospitals not accepting the application, forced the family to take Amani to many places before he was transferred to the University of Michigan – where he spent his final days.

Despite the medical team’s best efforts, they were forced to tell the family that any treatment would save one thing but kill another – a medical battle they could not win.

DEON DERRICO CRYING AS HE RECALLS HIS FINAL MOMENTS – “IN THE ROOM THERE WAS ONLY AMANI, GOD AND LOVE”

In a tearful livestream, Deon Derrico recounted the haunting moment of his farewell to Amani.

Amani still recognized Deon and Gigi, held hands, and responded clearly despite his weak body. His family tried to hold back tears so as not to make him lose hope.

Doctors then announced the final choice:
remove the breathing tube, the feeding tube, and switch to palliative care – because all the treatments were contradictory.

Deon said he could not forget the image of Amani struggling to breathe, and only when Amani passed away was he able to sleep again after many sleepless days.

When Amani took his last breath, there was only Amani’s mother (Stacy), aunt Rock, and young son Adonis in the room. About 30 minutes before he died, Amani suddenly raised his hand as if greeting someone, his eyes still closed – leading his family to believe he had “met” a loved one or a divine being who had come to pick him up.

Deon then held Amani’s body, cut off a piece of hair as a keepsake, and made a handprint in clay to give to his son.

He shared:

“Amani passed away surrounded by love. It was just Amani, God and love in that room.”

THE PAIN COVERS THE FAMILY – FANS SEND CONDOLENCES

Deon said he was in pain not only for himself, but also for his mother (Gigi), for his children – who considered Amani a brother.
Amani was the first cousin Deon’s children ever had, and they were extremely close.

Stacy’s family – Amani’s mother – despite having just lost a child, still cooked, cared for, and hugged Deon and Gigi like family.

What broke Deon the most was when Stacy asked him:
“Do you agree to let me bury Amani next to his biological father?”
A question that brought tears to everyone’s eyes.

Media like People Magazine reported it immediately, posting a photo of Amani beaming from season 3 – a vibrant image that made the pain even harder to bear.

Deon expressed his deep gratitude for the thousands of messages of support and encouragement from the community:

“Without you, I don’t know how we would have gotten through this.”

The Derrico family also asked for continued prayers for Amani and especially for Adonis, who will now have to grow up without a father.
